Something Different

We have mostly moved on from Super Bowl football and on to basketball in the pro sports area. Yet something happened with this past Super Bowl that causes me to take another look.
Before and after the Super Bowl we heard some responses of the coaches to the news media. So often they seem to say about the same thing. But this year was different. For much of the news media, there was a big buzz about African-Americans being head coaches of the opposing teams. Sometime in the week before, Smith, the Bear’s coach, had said that he was excited about the opportunity and the progress being made. He also went on to say that he was talking about the day—when we’re not talking about the day the first African-American coaches led their teams to the Super Bowl.
Being the first African-American coach with a winning Super Bowl team would have been something very impressive to some folks. But the two coaches from opposing teams went into the Super Bowl with a whole different attitude than some would have had.
